There is a “Little Africa” in Rio that is still Unknown by most people. You will learn about the history of the port and its role on the slave trade, its labor movements and economic growth; Brazilian Black History Figures; This route is about Brazilian history and its African roots. It showcases archaeological sites and how they’re deeply connected with who we are as Brazilians. Here you will find out about one of the most prominent art hubs and hear about resilience, historic figures that helped to built up our wealth on the fields of science, philosophy, music, religion, gastronomy, and culture in general. Get to know about some of the people who fought for freedom and built the foundations of Black movements in Brasil.

Embark on your discovery on a legacy tour through our African Heritage Route, visiting sensitive sites of memory such as the Valongo Warf where most of our African ancestors arrived on the 1800. Stop at the archeological sites of Pedra do Sal, one of the samba cradles, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site for the Transatlantic Slave Trade in Rio’s port area, visit the slave cemetery at the Institute of New Blacks, and the spray painted mural “Ethnicities” that features on the Guinness Book.

Discover Brazilian African heritage through its legacy and cultural assets on an experience full of soul shared by an incredible network of tour guides fascinated by their African traditions on the mixed grounds of South America. Through a program filled with music, dances, and delicious gastronomy. Visit historic sites and learn about slavery trade through port cities and art districts, where the bitter sweet history of sugar mills and coffee farms blend with the struggles and resilience of our people. You will hear stories shared by local historians and tour guides who acknowledge the struggles and bequests of afro descendants by themselves through anecdotes and cases of resilience and conquers. Be either in the city or in smaller towns or “quilombo” villages through sites of memory and natural wonders of the Atlantic Forest.

My name is Kelly Tavares I run my own tourism company, Rio Encantos Experiences, promoting social responsible tourism for global connections.
We are currently working on the foundation of an afro tourism network of guides, in Brasil, in order to expand the range of activities and to work in a collaborative manner we have being creating partnerships with tour guides and organizations across the Atlantic, with special attention to initiatives around Black heritage tours.
